The Saloon Stock Car Speed Weekend has continued to grow year on year, with 2025 being no exception. A mammoth turnout of saloons was in attendance with representation from all corners of the UK including the current World Champion Archie Brown.
Saturday evening would see 3 heat races before the main Irish Open showdown at the end of the meeting.
Joey Reynolds took the opening spoils of the evening before Andrew Mathieson secured the victory in heat two. The third and final heat was an action packed affair, Stevie Honeyman held on for the win ahead of Brad Compton Sage and Ryan Wright after some late shuffles.
After all the points had been tallied for the Irish Open title decider Barry Russell emerged the pole sitter alongside the defending title holder Brad “Buster” Sage. Menacingly placed on row two was seasoned campaigners Ryan Wright and Stevie Honeyman.
At the drop of the green Wright quickly dispatched Russell to take up the running, as Wright started to stretch clear the first of many caution periods were called. On the resumption Wright and Joey Reynolds scrapped for the top spot before Buster wriggled into the fight also. The busy feature event continued in a stop start fashion with many yellow flag periods not allowing any to truly break free. With only a lap to run and the first five well clear (Buster, Reynolds, Jordan Cassie, Wright and Ryan Santry) another spanner was thrown into the works as the yellow caution lights illuminated. After a frantic last lap dash Cassie dodged the drama to take the glory. Joining him on the podium was Reynolds and Santry.
The ORCi Stock Rod Irish Open title was also up for grabs. Defending holder William Donnell got his evening off to a flying start with a convincing win in the opening qualifying heat. Heat two went the way the visiting Jamie Dawson. Donnell dominated the Irish Open race in its entirety to reclaim the green and white checkers, Larne man Donnell was joined on the podium by former World Champions Jack Kennedy (2nd) and Samuel Montgomery (3rd).
The Ministox were on Irish Open qualifying duties, with three heats races on the billing. Wayne Wedge Jnr was the victor in heat one. Scotland’s Rhys Anderson took the flag in heat two before the young lady race Demi Ritchie claimed the spoils in the third encounter.
Also qualifying only on Saturday was the 1300 Stock Cars. Three heats for the Iron man title seen wins for Matthew Weir, Joshua McKinstry and Craig Bodenham. Not a winner on the night was Michael Logan however he was the talking point after a spectacular roll over on the back straight during the third heat.
The Brisca F2 Stock Cars were on hand to provide support action; the field was swollen by a sprinkling of visiting interest. Shea Fegan and Alfie Flecken enjoyed a heat win apiece. Notably for Flecken, it was his debut weekend in the formula. Graham Fegan stormed through in the feature final to take the honours ahead of Ryan McCrory and Flecken.
Completing the packed race card was the Junior Rods. Riley Dawson Stirling and Ryan Addis shared the heat honours before Addis went on to take the final spoils also. In the final Codi Wilson and Mya Hill rounded out the trophy places.
