It was an afternoon of high drama at Nuttscorner Raceway to conclude the 2020 season, with seven formula’s as well as the now annual NI Car Jump on the agenda.

The season finale event for the 2L Saloon Stock Cars, Brisca F2 Stock Cars, 1300 Stock Cars and Junior Rods was the Golden Helmet Championship, with the Rookie Bangers racing for the King of Nutts Corner title while the Back to Basic Bangers and Micro F2’s were on domestic duties.

Bangor’s Craig McConnell performed a faultless double victory in the Brisca F2 Stock Cars, taking the win the 2020 Golden Helmet before bagging the revenge race honours also. Stephen McCready was the feature race pole sitter with McConnell starting alongside; the scene was set for a fine dual. McCready took up the early running however it wasn’t long before McConnell made his move for the lead, McCready returned fire, spinning himself in the process. This paved the way for McConnell to edge further clear and indeed take the victory, McCready recovered well to secure the runner up spot ahead of Thomas Greer in third.

Former Junior Rod star Jonathan Brown stamped his authority in the 1300 Stock Cars as they also contested the Golden Helmet. Brown who has enjoyed a successful start to his 1300 career commanded proceedings right from the off. The local lad who started from pole position completed the 20 lap distance unhindered to take the honours; Ryan Stewart claimed the runner up spot ahead of Fionn Donnelly. Donnelly managed to escape the carnage to take the win in what was a lively revenge race.

Arguably the most anticipated race of the afternoon was the 2L Saloon Stock Car Golden Helmet Championship final. The hard hitting no holds barred Saloons are experiencing something of a renaissance currently in the province with several new drivers joining the ranks as well as the return of some former star names. The 15 car grid for the title decider was formed in order of points scored from all the meetings since the return of racing after the Covid-19 outbreak. Armagh’s Geoff Martin and Portglenone’s Sean McFerran occupied the front row of the grid, while former 3 time Irish Champion Ryan Wright joined the current Irish title holder Matthew Stirling on row two. At the drop of the green flag Wright quickly dealt a blow on the pole sitter Martin to move through to the front in the opening lap, Martin established himself in second spot briefly before the bumpers went flying in which reshuffled the pack including a spin for McFerran. All the while those behind exchanged spots Wright continued to increase his advantage at the front, completing the 20 lap race to take the win and the title for the second time. Joining Wright on the podium was the McIvor Brothers with Anthony in Second and Kieran third. A revenge race concluded the 2020 saloon season where McFerran took the honours.

Jack Morrow continued his recent spate of good form in the Junior Rods where he out performed his rivals to land the Golden Helmet title in style, the Rathfriland youngster kept his calm throughout, completing the distance to claim glory. Calyn People enjoyed a fine run also to pick up the runner up spot ahead of Ryan Dilly.

Andrew Russell and Alicia McConnell were the star performers in the Micro F2’s, recording first and second place finishes respectively in both events. Each of the youngsters taking part received an award kindly sponsored by Bonar’s Quarries and Arbuckle Auto Repairs.

Adding to the excitement of the afternoon there were two Banger formula’s on display. Josh Goligher had a successful run in the Rookie Bangers picking up the King of NuttsCorner title. William Donnell bagged the Back to Basics Banger Final victory before David Gurney to the DD spoils.

Race action returns to Nutts Corner

The race action returned to Nutts Corner Raceway on Sunday 9th August after almost 5 months of absence due to the Corona Virus outbreak. It was a mammoth afternoon of racing, featuring 7 formula’s contesting no less than 21 races.
Speedy bags final silverware

The afternoon got off to the traditional start in the form of Brisca F2 Stock Car heat one. It was back to business as usual for Bangor’s Craig McConnell who took the honours, on the back of a hat trick of wins at the opening meeting of 2020 back in March; Gavin Fegan was the runner up with Thomas Greer in third. While on the victory lap McConnell’s machinery incurred engine troubles which would side-line him for the afternoon. Fegan managed to go one better in heat two where he cruised to victory ahead of Stephen “ Speedy “ McCready. Despite Fegan’s best efforts he was unable to hold of the rapid McCready who went on take the final win and bag the silverware, Fegan was the gallant runner up with Greer again third.

The Wright return

The 2L Saloon Stock Cars were out in force, with a number of drivers joining the hard hitting formula on top of the return of others such as the former multi champion Andrew Stewart. It was something off a challenge for the drivers throughout the afternoon as they competed using a new tyre compound as per a recent rule change. Geoff Martin showed some rapid pace taking the honours in both heat events. Martin was again among the pace setters during the early part of the meeting final, this would all change however as a caution period was required when Marcus Watt become stranded on the back straight. With the cars all bunched again on the restart it wasn’t long until the star graders were in play. Ryan Wright swiftly dealt a blow on Martin and Dylan Booth to move through to the front, Stewart was another who was making moves which turned out brief as he got tangled up with Booth, as he moved through to second. From his position at the head of the field Wright commanded proceedings, completing the distance to take the glory ahead of Irish Champion Matthew Stirling and Sean McFerran.

Jon hangs on for final victory.

The 1300 Stock Cars like the 2L Saloons were somewhat lively throughout the afternoon with plenty of contact as the drivers battled for positions. Star driver Robbie Wright was the first to taste victory with a well-executed win in the opening heat. Returnee Jon McQuillan used his newly built Vauxhall Adam to full advantage in the remainder of the meeting where he romped to victory in the second heat and grand final. The final was a hostile affair from the off and its conclusion was no different, with McQuillan surviving a last bend lunge from Michael Logan to take the honours, Logan was runner up with Jonathan Brown a pleasing third in his first senior formula appearance.

Support Formula Round Up.

Completing the billing was the Stock Rods, Junior Rods, Micro F2’s and Back 2 Basics Micro Bangers.
Ballymena lad Cole McFall romped to the opening Stock Rod win before Antrim’s Mark Kilpatrick claimed the honours in heat 2. Junior Rod graduate Mark Crawford marked his transition the senior ranks in style, when he cruised to a runaway win in the final ahead of Chris Hamill and Raymond Harper.

Rathfriland’s Jack Morrow was in commanding form in the Junior Rods, completing the afternoon undefeated with wins in both heats and the final. The final podium was completed with Jordan Nicholl (runner up) and Jamie Cardwell (third).

It was a promising start to the season for the Micro F2 Stock Cars with numbers into the double figures; this is a fun based formula for youngsters from the age of 6 to 10. Each of the competitors receives an award at the end of the day to mark their participation.

A welcome addition to the race card was the Back 2 Basics Micro Bangers. There was plenty of crashing and smashing to keep the onlookers entertained. Lucas Goligher and William Donnell shared the heat wins before local man Matthew McKinstry upped his game to take the final win.

The race action continues on Sunday (23rd August) 1pm featuring Brisca F2 Stock Cars, 2L Saloon Stock Cars, Junior Rods, Micro F2’s, 1300 Saloon Stock Cars and Group 2 Lightning Rods.

Sunday afternoon seen the concluding chapter of Paddy Whack 2020 action. This time the Micro Bangers were joined by their larger cousins, the Unlimited Bangers as well as Stock Rods and Brisca F2 Stock Cars.

Local Ace Noel Anderson was the crème of the crop, when he glided his way to victory in the Micro Banger Pots of Gold Final while all around him were crashing. Surviving the blitz to join Anderson on the winner’s rostrum was Matthew McKinstry making it a N.I 1-2. Anderson and Liam shared the heat victories later in the day before Killian Eager outlasted his competitors to take the DD spoils.

The Unlimited’s entered the Arena in force to contest their first event of the day which was the 2020 Euro Masters Showdown. Leonard Dunn and former World Champion Steven Bolton were the first to show, as they broke well clear of the carnage behind. While there were battles taking place throughout the field the leading duo continued to stay clear of trouble. As the race neared it’s conclusion a red flag stoppage was required, after Liam Lake dispatched Davey O’Connor in brutal style on the Airport bend. The cars were lined up once again for the restart which would involve a last lap dash to the flag. It was drama all the way with Dunn and Bolton having a drag race to the flag after a last bend coming together. Bolton piped Dunn to the line for the glory, Dunn was forced to settle for second with Gordy McKee third. Later in the day Steven Bolton had another visit to victory lane with a win in heat one. Heat two went the way of England’s Ricki Finney before the green flag was aired to commence the DD. After a few crunching moments the checkers were displayed again with Gordy McKee declared the DD victor.

In the support formula Antrim’s Mark Kilpatrick was on the pace in the ORCi Stock Rods, claiming victory in the opening heat and meeting final. Local man Joseph Largey denied Kilpatrick the perfect hat trick by chalking up a win in heat two.
Bangor’s Craig McConnell was in very dominating form in the Brisca F2 Stock Cars notching up a double heat victory as well as taking the Gold Cup title for the second year running. Bradley McKinstry showed some impressive pace throughout the afternoon taking second in the Gold Cup ahead of Stephen McCready in third.

Racing continues with a Charity Meeting on Sunday 29th March at 1pm featuring Brisca F2 Stock Cars, 2L Saloon Stock Cars, Stock Rods, Junior Rods & Back to Basic Micro Bangers.

The 2020 Nutts Corner race season kicked off in style on Saturday Evening with day number one of the Paddy Whack weekender.
The Micro Bangers were the main attraction as they contested their Irish Open Championship. The Micro Bangers are always sure to provide a great mix of racing and crashing with this encounter being no exception. England’s Liam Lake was undefeated in the heat events however he had to settle for runner up in the Irish Open title, when his fellow county man Matt Woodcock claimed the honours. It was an all English cast on the podium with Maison Waugh bagging third place.

The support action on the night was provided by the lively 2L Saloon Stock Cars and Junior Rods.
Matthew Stirling was on top form in the 2L Saloon Stock Cars where he romped to a double heat victory before winning the Gold Cup Final. Ryan Wright was his nearest pursuer picking up the runner up spot ahead of Kieran McIvor.
It was a similar picture in the Junior Rod section where Sam Stewart cruised to a hat trick of wins. Joining Sam on the Final podium was Josh Anderson and Odhran McGeown.
