Speedy bags final silverware
The afternoon got off to the traditional start in the form of Brisca F2 Stock Car heat one. It was back to business as usual for Bangor’s Craig McConnell who took the honours, on the back of a hat trick of wins at the opening meeting of 2020 back in March; Gavin Fegan was the runner up with Thomas Greer in third. While on the victory lap McConnell’s machinery incurred engine troubles which would side-line him for the afternoon. Fegan managed to go one better in heat two where he cruised to victory ahead of Stephen “ Speedy “ McCready. Despite Fegan’s best efforts he was unable to hold of the rapid McCready who went on take the final win and bag the silverware, Fegan was the gallant runner up with Greer again third.
The Wright return
The 2L Saloon Stock Cars were out in force, with a number of drivers joining the hard hitting formula on top of the return of others such as the former multi champion Andrew Stewart. It was something off a challenge for the drivers throughout the afternoon as they competed using a new tyre compound as per a recent rule change. Geoff Martin showed some rapid pace taking the honours in both heat events. Martin was again among the pace setters during the early part of the meeting final, this would all change however as a caution period was required when Marcus Watt become stranded on the back straight. With the cars all bunched again on the restart it wasn’t long until the star graders were in play. Ryan Wright swiftly dealt a blow on Martin and Dylan Booth to move through to the front, Stewart was another who was making moves which turned out brief as he got tangled up with Booth, as he moved through to second. From his position at the head of the field Wright commanded proceedings, completing the distance to take the glory ahead of Irish Champion Matthew Stirling and Sean McFerran.
Jon hangs on for final victory.
The 1300 Stock Cars like the 2L Saloons were somewhat lively throughout the afternoon with plenty of contact as the drivers battled for positions. Star driver Robbie Wright was the first to taste victory with a well-executed win in the opening heat. Returnee Jon McQuillan used his newly built Vauxhall Adam to full advantage in the remainder of the meeting where he romped to victory in the second heat and grand final. The final was a hostile affair from the off and its conclusion was no different, with McQuillan surviving a last bend lunge from Michael Logan to take the honours, Logan was runner up with Jonathan Brown a pleasing third in his first senior formula appearance.
Support Formula Round Up.
Completing the billing was the Stock Rods, Junior Rods, Micro F2’s and Back 2 Basics Micro Bangers.
Ballymena lad Cole McFall romped to the opening Stock Rod win before Antrim’s Mark Kilpatrick claimed the honours in heat 2. Junior Rod graduate Mark Crawford marked his transition the senior ranks in style, when he cruised to a runaway win in the final ahead of Chris Hamill and Raymond Harper.
