Mon 7th May Race Report

Graham Fegan was in scintillating form to lift the F2 Stock Car Golden Helmet Final award at Nutts Corner Raceway. Two Qualifying heats preceded the final and Fegan won both on a very wet track. The rain poured down for the final and at the green flag pole setter Fegan was past briefly by Chris Kincaid but Fegan fought back to gain the lead. Craig McConnell was soon on Fegan’s rear bumper and slipped through to lead. Fegan tried to regain the lead but came off worse in a tangle with McConnell and spun around. The race was halted when Willie Murray hit the fence hard and had to be assisted out of his car. At the restart McConnell sailed away ahead of Kincaid, Ryan McCrory, Jeff Minish, Fegan, Denver Grattan and Gregg Hyndman. Fegan started his charge forward picking off his opposition all in quick succession to move up to second. The race was now on for supremacy and Fegan just ate up the ground on the leader and in the closing laps eased past McConnell and on to a super win lifting the Golden Helmet award. McConnell was a good runner up and Minish wrenched the final podium spot from Kincaid on the last lap. Grattan also had a fine finish clinching fourth on the line from Kincaid. Hyndman can feel pleased with his sixth place on his first race in the class at the track.

Glenn Bell left his best to the last in the National Hot Rod World Qualifying round 14 final. Heat one went to Gary Woolsey after he broke down early leader Andy Cochrane. John Christie came through for second and Stewart Doak was third. In heat two Cochrane kept his nose in front to clinch victory ahead of Bell and Christie. Cochrane got a great start to lead in the final with Woolsey and Keith Martin dicing for second. Bell soon moved up to challenge Woolsey and Martin and after a few close encounters Bell was up to second. Cochrane was a good half lap ahead but lap after lap Bell gradually reduced the deficit and was on his rear bumper in the final few laps. Bell went through easily and on to a magnificent victory. Cochrane held on for second. Doak, Christie, Woolsey, Martin and Adam Maxwell were the other finishers.

Jaimie McCurdy was back on the winning trail taking a fine win in the Junior Rod final. Antony Kincaid was first to show speed leading off the final but had Mark Rainey to contend with on his rear bumper. Calvin Blake was also in the trio and Kincaid ended spun out. Bradley McKinstry hit the fence when his steering broke and the race had to be stopped to remove his car.  At the restart Rainey powered away as Dylan Magee and McCurdy fell into second and third respectively. Peter Greer, Dean McCrory, Aaron Moody and Robert Mawhinney were all battling hard for the next pacing’s. Magee claimed the lead with McCurdy also move into second as Rainey fell well back down the order. With only four laps remaining McCurdy grabbed the lead and went on to carry the chequered flag. Magee was runner up ahead of McCrory, Greer, Moody, Rainey, Mawhinney and Marc Winchester. McKinstry was the master in heat one winning ahead of McCrory and Magee. Mawhinney held his nerve for a marvellous heat two win leaving Rainey second and Magee third.

Davy Reynolds came through a highly completive field of 1300 Stock Cars to claim victory in the final. Andy Scott edged into the lead at the greens with a determined Dan Shannon in tow. Reynolds was soon making his presents felt in a great three way action packed battle for the lead. Reynolds was no push over on his attempt for glory. He soon pushed through with Shannon just as keen keeping the pressure on Reynolds. Gary Lee had a burst of exuberance landing him in third and with the arrival of Willie Stewart Lee was rather hard on his fellow racer in a fierce swipe towards the fence. Lee was quick to retire and Stewart did likewise. Back at the front Reynolds was still fending off Shannon in a fight to the finish. Richard Taylor came through well to settle in third. Reynolds stayed the distance in a great and exciting finally crossing the finish line first ahead of Shannon and Taylor a safe third. Robbie Browne, Connor Smith, Wayne Hewitt, Ben Armstrong, Colin Woods, Scott, Ryan Barrett and Raymond Harper were the other finishers. Shannon took his first win in the class in the opening heat and Stewart also had his first win in heat two in his debut in the class.

Ryan Stewart switched classes from the 1300 Stock Cars to the Super 1600’s and stamped his authority on the class with his win in the final. Thomas Megarry was in control in the opening laps with Jonny Kirk up in second and Richie Browne in third. Brown still enjoying his sideways drive got himself to the pinnacle with Stewart and James Goldie in hot pursuit and waiting on any slip ups from Browne. Goldie force his way to the front only for Browne to regain the leading position. Stewart battled back to take the lead from Browne and on to his first final win in the class. Browne, Kirk, Megarry, Stephen McClinton, Goldie and Gerard Caldwell were the best of the rest. Goldie and Megarry were the heat winners.

Wed 25th April Race Report

Christopher Kincaid kept his best to the final in the F2 Stock Cars at Nutts Corner Raceway. Chris Hamill’s good run kept him out in front for over half the race. Gareth McFetridge, Kris Fitzpatrick, Willie Murray and Gary Blair were all in the thick of the action as Kincaid broke through their web to go second. Craig McConnell was the only other Star man to break into the top three. Hamill made brave strides to stay out in the lead but Kincaid had other ideas as he managed to get his nose in front in the closing laps. McConnell also squeezed out Hamill for runner up spot. Denver Grattan came through to fourth ahead of Murray, Conor Hughes, Blair and Fitzpatrick. McConnell beat Hughes to the win in heat one while Hamill kept McConnell and Grattan at bay for the win in heat two.

Adam Heatrick Wednesday nights trip to the Raceway proved very successful in the 2ltr Hot Rods with the final win and two runners up places in the heats. Bobby Johnston recent recruit from the Stock Rod’s started his campaign from the front in the final and built up a commanding lead. Garry Campbell, Petie Donnelly and Heatrick were next in tow. Campbell eventually caught Johnston and diced on the outside for the lead. As the action at the front continued Adam Hylands and Shane Murray also closed in to a very crowded pack at the front. Campbell’s assault fades on Johnston while Heatrick got into second and eventually got the better of Johnston for the lead. Hylands also impressed taking over second. Campbell fell into third as Johnston fell back quickly on the outside line. Heatrick went on to win superbly in the very wet track and Hylands making a special trip back from University in Preston made it all worthwhile with a excellent runner up spot. Campbell, S Murray, Johnston, Derek Martin, Gary Wilson, Philip Beatty, Feargal McNally and Andrew Murray completed the top ten. Johnston had his first win in the class in heat one while McNally clinched heat two.

Controversy raged in the 1300 Stock Car Golden Helmet final. Qualifying Heats went to rivals Dan Feeney and Francie Smilie but a better finish for Feeney in the other heats put him on pole for the final. Feeney raced off into the lead at the greens with ex Saloon driver Ross Houston soon getting himself into second behind Feeney with Ryan Stewart in third. The action was a bit too heavy with Houston and Ryan Wright seemed intent on wrecking all in their path. The leader Feeney soon felt the brunt of Wright bumper as he deliberately put Feeney into the fence with great force while his mate Houston was gifted the lead. That didn’t last long as Smilie darted into the lead and Stewart also got himself into second. Darren McKinstry was in better form as was Davy Reynolds both holding down third and fourth places respectively. There was no stopping Smilie as he raced on to win easily ahead of Stewart with Reynolds securing third place. Wayne Hewitt, McKinstry, Daniel Shannon, Richard Taylor and Adrian McKinstry were the next finishers.

Richie Browne was in top for in the Super 1600’s with is first final win in the newly revamped class. Jonny Kirk looked good as he made the early running going well out in front as Browne Thomas Megarry, James Goldie and Nicky Lowry all battled for second. Browne doing some sideways driving gradually reeled in Kirk and after a good dice for the lead Browne was away to clinch a good first final win in the new class. Kirk held on for second ahead of Lowry, George Esler, Sam McKinstry and Gerard Caldwell. Kirk and Browne had a win each in the Heats.

Sunday 15th April Race Report

Antrim’s teenager Peter Greer drove a perfect race in the Junior Rod final to claim the Paints and Components Challenge Cup round 1 Trophy at Nutts Corner Raceway. Templepatrick’s Robert Mawhinny lead the charge at the front with Louise Donnell second and Niall McFerran third. Greer soon stepped up a gear to go second and after another lap he was out in the lead. Bradley McKinstry, Dylan Magee and Dean McCrory were also on their way up the pack. Mawhinny and Donnell then fell down the line as McCrory surged up into second. McFerran held on in third with Magee and McKinstry in combat for fourth. With five laps to go McCrory was on Greer’s back bumper. In the final few laps both drivers drove superbly and Greer held the upper hand fending off McCrory for a super win. McFerran held on for third ahead of Magee, McKinstry, Jaimie McCurdy, Calvin Blake, Mawhinny, Donnell and Marc Winchester. McCrory was the winner of both heats

Jeff Minish was in super form to record his first F2 final victory since his return to the sport last year. Chris Hamill and Gareth McFetridge battled it out for the lead on the opening lap with Hamill coming out on top to lead. Sam McKay, Willie Murray and Kris Fitzpatrick were the next down the grid dicing for positions. Minish soon started to move into contention picking off Fitzpatrick and Murray to go fourth. The top three remained static for about eight laps until Minish again surged towards the front. Hamill was being put under pressure from McKay and just as McKay nicked the lead Minish just as quickly overpowered McKay to go out in front. Ryan McCrory, Craig McConnell, Conor Hughes and Denver Grattan lost ground on the leaders as the exchanged placings many times through the race in nail biting action. Minish went on to jubilantly take his first final in a very long time just ahead of McKay and Hamill. A quarter of a lap down came McCrory in fourth ahead of McConnell, Hughes, Murray and McFetridge. Murray beat Hamill to the winning post in heat one and McKay took the honours in heat two.

Dan Feeney continued to dominate the 1300 Stock Cars with a double success winning heat two and the final. Davy Reynolds and Craig Smyth were the first away in the final but a race stoppage soon occurred when Connor Smith’s car was left stranded on the track. The race had just resumed when Reynolds car lost a piece of his bumper in a collusion and again the race was stopped to clear the track. At the second restart Feeney got straight into the lead from Ryan Stewart, Michael Logan and Richard Taylor. Stewart kept on Feeney’s rear bumper but never seemed to have the edge to mount a serious challenge on the leader. There was plenty of good action through the race as Feeney went on to take his second final win in a row. Stewart was runner up and Logan had his best result coming in third. Taylor, Mark McCambridge and Ricky Peoples were the next finishers. Sean McFerran was the winner of heat one winning ahead of Reynolds and Stewart.

James Goldie had the edge over his competitors in the Super 1600’s to easily take the final victory. Jonny Kirk in his immaculate car was the leader for over half the race. Thomas Megarry was in second but went out with engine failure. Last time out winner Trevor McFaul held third for a while but was spun out later on. Goldie soon moved through and went into second and gradually reeled in the leader. With a few laps remaining Goldie was through and away to a convincing win. Nicky Lowry late challenge on Kirk netted him the runner up spot. . George Esler and McFaul filled the next two places. Goldie clinched the heat one win and McFaul carried the chequered flag in heat two.

Racing is back on Wednesday night the 25th April when the 1300Stock Cars race for the Golden Helmet Award. F2 Stock Cars, 2ltr Hot Rods and Super 1600’s are also on the programme. Action gets underway at 7-30pm

Sunday 1st April Meeting Review Report

Ballinderry driver Dan Feeney was in fine form in the new 1300 Stock Cars chalking up a double success at Nutts Corner Raceway. After an eventful first action packed meeting last week Feeney came through unscathed to carry the chequered flag in the first heat and the final. Irish Junior Rod Champion Sean McFerran was the leader for a few laps in the final before Feeney came storming through to reel him in and go out into the lead. Others battling it out behind the two front runners were Ben Armstrong, Ryan Stewart, Connor Smith and Ricky Peoples. The good close and contact racing was exciting with plenty of places being exchanged. Feeney stayed in pole as Armstrong and Francie Smylie were in second and third respectively doing all they could to try and catch Feeney. With the race going into its final stages Feeney was still in control at the front. Armstrong closed the gap slightly and Robbie Browne rolled up into third. Feeney went on to take his first final win in the class ahead of Armstrong, McFerran and Browne. Richard Taylor, Smith, Peoples and Denny Armstrong were the other finishers. Feeney again held off B Armstrong to win heat one and B Armstrong carried the Chequered flag in heat. Michael Logan was runner up.

Sam McKay made his first appearance of the season in the F2 Stock Cars and went home with the winning trophy in the final and also clinched the opening heat win. Chris Hamill raced off into the lead at the start of the final with McKay, Andy Stewart, Willie Murray and Ryan McCrory all in hot pursuit. McKay soon got on terms with Hamill and took up the lead. Murray wasn’t long till he made it into second and McCrory third. Hamill eventually fell back to the rear of the pack. Christopher Kincaid caught up with McCrory and had a few exchanges with the bumper and also in positions. McKay kept the foot down and Murray couldn’t make any impression on the leader as McKay ran out the winner by a quarter of a lap over Murray. Kincaid seized third ahead of McCrory, Craig McConnell, Graham Fegan, Denver Grattan, Stewart and Hamill. McKay made the opening his own winning ahead of Murray and Stewart. Murray lifted the heat two win ahead of McCrory and Stewart.

Gary Woolsey wrapped up the National Hot Rod world Qualifier round nine with a treble of victories and a full set of points for his efforts. Woolsey’s good grid position saw him soon out in the lead in both heats. Heat one was left to John Christie and Stewart Doak to argue over the runner up spot with Christie making it his. Christie again claimed the second place in heat two ahead of Glenn Bell. In the final Davy McKay just held out Woolsey for the lead on the opener but Woolsey soon went past on the outside. Bell was in a hurry to make up for his failed finish in heat one and shot past McKay for second. Christie was next to impress moving swiftly into third. Down the pack Adam Maxwell and Doak were in a real side by side duel which lasted a good few laps before Doak got the better of him. Woolsey was still fairly comfortable at the front but was been reeled in by Christie who had earlier got the upper hand on Bell. In the second half of the race Christie got to within striking distance of Woolsey and Bell was just as close on Christie’s tail. There were no more major changes to the order with Woolsey taking the chequered flag and his treble on the day. Christie, Bell, Keith Martin, Doak, Maxwell and McKay were the next past the post.

Trevor McFaul had an old silencer that had fallen off some ones car to thank for his final win in the first running of the Super1600’s. Thomas Megarry headed the pack at the off with a determent Lee Booth in tow. Booth soon got the upper hand and was away to lead at the front. Jonny Kirk and McFaul also overhauled Megarry to go second and third. James Goldie was on a charge and wasted no time as he got ahead of Megarry and McFaul. However all his good work was spoiled when he was bundled out on the airport bend. McFaul was back in second but was failing to gain on the leader Booth. The waved yellow flag came into play and the race was halted to remove and old silencer off the racing line. Booth’s lead was lost, and at the restart McFaul grabbed the lead and went on to win the first final for the class. Booth had to be content with the runner up spot and Nicky Lowry was third. Kirk, George Esler, Megarry and Goldie completed the finishers.

Next Raceway meeting is on Sunday the 15th April at 2pm.

Sunday 25th March Meeting Review Report

Nutts Corner ace Jonny Stirling took a convincing victory in the F2 Stock Car Final at Nutts Corner Raceway. Stirling was in his new mount the ex Chris Burgoyne car. Gareth McFetridge and Chris Hamill diced side by side in the opening laps before McFetridge got the upper hand to lead. Ronnie Scott, Stirling, Willie Murray and Jeff Minish were next down the line. Stirling who hadn’t figured in the two opening heats soon powered up into second and quickly reeled in McFetridge to take over at the front. Hamill dropped down the placings and later McFetridge did likewise and later pulled out of the race. By half stage the order was Stirling, Murray, Graham Fegan and Christopher Kincaid. Stirling looked good as he kept well ahead of Murray who was later overhauled by Fegan. Stirling went on to win comfortably with Kincaid getting the better of Fegan on the last lap for runner up position. Denver Grattan moved up to finish fourth. Murray, Craig McConnell and Hamill completed the finishers. McConnell took victory in the opening heat and Grattan carried the chequered flag in heat two.

Dylan Magee kept all his rivals at bay to scorch to victory in the Junior Rod Final. New driver Anthony Kincaid was game enough to start at the front and led the pack for a good few laps before he conceded to Magee, Robert Mawhinney was also going well holding down second early in the race. The action behind Magee was hotting up between  Jaimie McCurdy, Dean McCrory and Aidan McFerran. All three battled it out over the remainder of the race. Magee kept out in front and although he may have had a reduced lead he still was clear at the finish line to wrap up the final victory. McCrory got the better of McCurdy to come home second. McCurdy, McFerran, Bradley McKinstry, Jack Kennedy, Kincaid and Louise Donnell were next best. Peter Greer had a double win in the heats but failed to finish in the final.

The new 1300 cc Stock Car Class lived up to its expectations with well presented cars and plenty of action to complete the package. Ex F2 Stock Car man Francie Smylie took victory in an eventful final. Smylie was lucky to draw pole for the final getting away clear from the rest of the pack. Dan Feeney, Richard Taylor and Ryan Stewart were next down the line. The Taylor, Feeney battle raged for lots of laps and Taylor ended crashed out in the fence. Plenty of contact was in evidence and there were a few cars didn’t manage to finish the race. Smylie was well clear out in the lead and when Taylor’s race ended Stewart inherited second. Feeney also went out of the action. Darren Mckinstry and Adrian McKinstry landed themselves in handy positions in the last few laps. Smylie big first final win just looked to easy with Stewart a half lap adrift in second. D McKinstry, A McKinstry, Ricky Peoples, Ben Armstrong, Connor Smith and Sean McFerran were the other place men. Smylie passed the finishing post first in the opening heat but was later disqualified at post race scrutineering handing the win to Richard Taylor. Feeney had a good battle with Smylie for supremacy in the other heat and came out on top.

Andy Stewart was again the master in the Saloon Stock Car Final. Anthony McIvor in his new car was the early pacesetter with Colin Jones in close contention. Stewart soon moved up the pack holding down third for a half dozen laps. Jones managed a lap out in front but McIvor regained his composure to retake the lead. Stewart reeled both in and took up the leading spot. Stuart McCammon and Ryan Wright exchanged places through the race but were well out of reach of the leader. Stewart reeled off the laps to take the chequered flag ahead of McIvor, Wright, McCammon and Jones. Stewart and McIvor had wins each in the heats.

Racing continues this Sunday 1st April with the National Hot Rods Topping the bill. F2 Stock Cars, 1300cc Stock Cars, Super 1600’s and a Car Ramp Rollover are all on the programme. Action starts at 2pm
