NATIONAL GLORY FOR WILLIE!

The 1300 Stock Cars were the headline act as they contested their 2023 National Championship. There were a good number of mainland drivers in attendance to do battle with the locals for the prestigious title.

Local man William Stewart was the star attraction of heat one as he handed out a heavy walling to Stephen McCready on his way to the victory. Stewart was followed across the line by Josh McKinstry and England’s Jake Banwell.

It was a local victor again in heat two, with Antrim’s Thomas McCrory Jnr taking the honours ahead of Englishman Steven Carter.
With the points tallied from the heats McCrory emerged the pole sitter with Spedeworth star name Curtis Tebbenham alongside while the earlier heat winner Stewart and Ivan Elliot occupied row two.

The race got off to something of an explosive start, which was to be expected. W Stewart soon settled into a comfortable rhythm at the head of the field. There was a few caution periods throughout which bunched the cars hot on the tail of the leader again, however Stewart was able to get away safely each time. William completed the distance to take the win and crown himself National Champion. Next across the line was Ryan Stewart with Banwell completing the podium steps in third.

There was visiting interest in the Brisca F2 Stock Cars with the welcome addition of Gordon Moodie and Jon Palmer, both of whom will have benefited from the track time ahead of the World Showdown in September.

It was the white graded Declan Og McFerran who picked up the opening win of the evening before Graham Fegan stormed through to take the flag in heat two. Come the final Scotland’s Gordon Moodie was on blistering pace however D Og McFerran managed to complete the laps ahead of Moodie and take the final glory. Irish Closed Champion Aiden McFerran completed the evening with a good win in what was a lively Grand National race.

Also in action in a support role capacity was the hard hitting 2L Saloon Stock Cars. Armagh’s Stuart McCammon took both the heat victories ahead of the Irish Champion Ryan Wright. McCammon continued his winning streak when he chalked up another win in the meeting final ahead of the McIvor brothers, Anthony and Kieran.

With the ORCi Stock Rod World Final just a month or so away the drivers were out in force to secure precious track time ahead of the big Showdown at Nutts Corner in September. Recent final winner Reuben Kernohan got his night off to a flying start wrapping up the victory in heat one. Lady racer Louise Donnell demonstrated fine pace taking the heat two spoils and indeed her maiden win in the formula. Randalstown teenager Sam Percy who has recently joined the Stock Rod ranks showed great promise ahead of the World Championship with a well calculated victory in the meeting final. Kernohan was the runner up with former World Champion Jack Kennedy third.

Charlie Hill was the Junior Rod heat one winner before Aaron Dilly dominated the remainder of the races; Dilly completed the distance to take a fine win heat two and went on to take the silverware in the final ahead of Hill and Ryan Abernethy Jnr.

Completing the busy race card was the Micro F2 Stock Cars where Alice McGaffin enjoyed a brace of heat wins before Casey Lee romped to victory in the final.
