The hard hitting, all action 2L Saloon Stock Cars took centre stage at NuttsCorner on Saturday evening as the Raceway hosted the first speed weekend of 2022.
With 40 cars assembled in the pit area, a two third format was used; with each driver taking part in two heats each with the aim of scoring points towards the grid formation of the Irish Open Championship Final.
The heat races were lively and served up plenty of drama as expected. Scotland’s Kai Gilmore and newcomer to the formula capitalised on his white grade starting slot to score glory in both his heat race. The third and final heat was won by Michael Allard the defending Irish Open Champion.
With the points tallied, the grid began to form under the flood lights at the popular Co Antrim Venue, where the atmosphere was at fever pitch.
Gilmore’s double heat victory secured him pole position, which would surely be an exciting yet daunting prospect for the teenager, as a star studded cast lined up around him. World Champion Allard completed the front row, with Scotland’s Stuart Shevill Jnr and the fast Ross watters next up. The third row was locked out by Graeme Shevill and the current Irish Champion Ryan Wright.
At the fall of the green the bumpers went flying in wholesale. A caution period was called on lap two when Wright become stranded on turn 2 after an entertaining scuffle involving most of the front runners. On the resumption Allard soon settled into the top spot with S Shevill looking like his biggest threat. After several exchanges and further caution periods S Shevill got shuffled backwards which paved the way for Allard to go on a take the title for a second time. G Shevill drove a consistent race to take the second spot on the podium, while Matthew Stirling had a good run through the pack to secure third.
The ORCi Stock Rods also contested their Irish Open Championship.
Jack Morrow showed promising pace in the opening qualifier to take the win before former World Champion Stephen “Speedy” McCready toured to victory in the second encounter.
After the points were counted and verified Jack Kennedy found himself on pole position with Scotland’s multiple champion David Philp along side. Next up was visiting driver Callum Hosie and McCready.
A thrilling race followed with the front runners all battling hard for position. At the conclusion Kennedy was first across the line, however Race Control issued a penalty for a misdemeanour earlier in the race. This promoted Hosie to the win, crowning him Irish Open Champion, McCready was now runner up with Kennedy demoted to third.
There was support action on the night from 1300 Stock Cars, Brisca F2 Stock Cars and Junior Rods.
The 1300’s contested three qualifying heats for their Iron Man Final which would take place on Sunday afternoon. Chris Hamill showed blistering pace taking two wins while recent newcomer Craig Bodenham scored the win in heat three.
It was a busy night for Jack Morrow, as he competed in the Stock Rods and Brisca F2 Stock Cars, where he thrashed his competition to take a flawless hat-trick of wins followed home by Adam McFall on each occasion.
Ava McCreight and Joshua Murray shared the Junior Rod Heat spoils before Daniel Stewart stamped his authority on the Final, taking the win ahead of Murray and Calyn Peoples.
There was an impressive entry of Micro F2's, swollen with the welcome addition of visiting drivers from the mainland. On the night William Graham and Cruz Strachan shared the wivtories.
