All Wright on the night for Robbie

It was championship time for the 1300 Stock Cars as the drivers battled it out for the Ulster Championship Crown.  Two heat races won by Robbie Wright and William Stewart decided the Grid for the Ulster showdown. The heat winners shared the front row of the grid with Joshua McKinstry and Michael Logan occupying row two.  Wright got off to a flying start leaving the opposition in his dust. McKinstry also pulled of an outstanding start and set about giving chase to the rapid Wright,  Mckinstry kept pace with Wright for the opening handful of laps but it soon emerged the recent Junior Rod graduate didn’t have anything left to close the gap. While the leaders continued to stretch away Logan, Nicky Lowry, Jon McQuillan and Ryan Stewart were all battling hard for the minor positions, with plenty of lively exchanges. At the head of proceedings Wright reeled of the remaining laps to take the win and crown himself Ulster Champion for 2018. McKinstry lasted the distance to record a fantastic runner up finish with William Stewart in third.

Gold Cup Delight for Wright

A pleasing entry of 11 2L Saloons were in action at NuttsCorner Raceway for the Gold Cup Championship, which included a welcome return of the former Irish Open Champion Ross Houston.  Two roof colour heats would determine the grid for the Gold Cup showdown.  Robert Mawhinney secured pole position after two fine heat wins. Alongside was Ryan Wright who bagged a second and third place finish in the heats. Menacingly placed in row two were Daryl McCammon and Matthew Stirling, both of whom performed strong in the heat events. As the green flag was shown Mawhinney took off in text book Style while Wright struggled to squeeze in from the outside line, which resulted in a drift around the wall in turn one for Wright courtesy of McCammon.  Mawhinney soon established himself a comfortable lead with Wright now recovered and settled well into second with Stirling in tow.  As the race progressed Wright edged nearer to the double heat winner Mawhinney until he was close to launch an assault on lap nine to take up at the front. From there Wright completed the distance to take the Gold Cup Championship,  Mawhinney was the gallant runner up with Stirling completing the podium steps.

Sean scoops final win

Portglenone’s Sean McFerran pulled of a flawless performance to claim victory in the Brisca F2 Stock Car Final. A healthy showing of the popular single seaters were in action with a pleasing mix of grades in attendance.  McFerran powered clear of his fellow blue graders, soon slicing through the white and yellow graded traffic to position himself in the lead. While McFerran continued to hold the advantage William Murray was close behind and all the while the rapid Graham Fegan was edging closer to the leading duo.  As the last lap marker was displayed McFerran, Murray  and Fegan were merely separated by a matter of car lengths. McFerran kept his cool to take the win however Murray missed out on the runner-up spot to Fegan after a last bend reshuffle. Earlier in the meeting Murray and Fegan shared the heat wins

Josh Grab’s the silverware

The entertaining Junior Rods were on hand to provide the non-contact element of Wednesday’s race programme. Chris Cardwell got his evening of to a fine start with a terrific victory in heat one. Josh Gooch stepped up his game to take the flag in heat two. The Cullybackey High School student Gooch was again on top form in the meeting final where he romped well clear to take his second win of the night. Jonathan Brown had a strong run to come home in second ahead of Mark Crawford in third.

Racing returns on Sunday 16th September at 1.30pm the headline event will be the 1300 Stock Car National Championship also featuring  Micro Bangers, Group 2 Lightning Rod Stadium Championship, Brisca F2 Stock Cars, Micro F2's & Junior Rods.
