Sloan and Harper crowned champions

The ORCi Stock Rods were in action at both events held at NuttsCorner Raceway on the 26th and 27th May.  Saturday seen the drivers contest the annual Gold Cup title. A two third format was used to determine the grid position for the showdown, which would see each driver compete in two qualifiers. Niall McFerran was the first to score points with a commanding victory in heat one before Raymond Harper and Adam Sloan shared the victories in heat two and three. The Heat three winner Sloan was quick out of the blocks in the title race, where he soon opened a healthy advantage over his pursuers Harper and McFerran. Sloan pulled off a smooth drive to take the first feature win of the weekend, Harper held on for second with McFerran third.

Sunday afternoon’s race meeting would see the European title up for grabs. On this occasion two all in heats were used to form the grid for the headline event. Steve Gooch romped to victory in the opening heat with the World Champion Stephen McCready close behind in second. Harper was back on form come heat two where he crossed the line first with Ballymena’s Aaron Moody next in tow. With the points all tallied, Harper emerged as the showdown pole sitter with Moody alongside while McFerran and McCready were menacingly lurking on row two.  On the arrival of the green flag Harper made the perfect escape and was quick to settle into an impressive rhythm out front. McFerran was another on the move and it wasn’t long until he becomes positioned on Harpers outside, looking for a way through to the front. Harper used all his experience to hold of the assault mounted by McFerran who looked the faster of the duo. As the 5 lap marker appeared Harper continued to lead the way however McFerran was still at large with Moody and Sloan in the mix also. McFerran continued to keep the pressure applied to the leader throughout the closing laps however this was in vain as Harper took the flag crowing himself European Champion. McFerran was the gallant runner up with Moody picking up a creditable third place finish. A revenge race concluded the weekend’s action with local man Sam McKinstry picking up the honours.

Sparks Fly at the ‘Corner’

The 2L Saloons were on hand to provide some of the support action during the ORCi Stock Rod European Championship speed weekend at Nutts Corner Raceway.  Ryan Wright was the first to taste victory when he romped to a clear victory in heat one ahead of Matthew Stirling and Kieran McIvor.  Ryan Patton and Peter Greer set the early pace in heat two, it wasn’t long until Wright closed the gap and made his way through to the front with the Irish Champion Anthony McIvor giving chase. Wright completed the distance to take his second win with Anthony and Kieran next in tow.  The meeting final got off to an energetic start as the red and champion graders squabbled for placing’s. While A McIvor, Wright and Winston Weir trade places k McIvor and Stirling were on route to the front.  Kieran soon settled into a comfortable rhythm in the lead with Stirling safely placed in second several car lengths back. By this stage Wright had cleared the traffic and was beginning to make progress from third closing down the gap steadily during the second half of the race. As the lap boards appeared Kieran still held the advantage however Stirling was edging ever closer as was Wright. With the trio all bunched on the arrival of the final lap board a grand stand finish was imminent. McIvor was edged wide on the airport bend by Stirling who moved through on the inside with Wright following suit, as they charged down the back straight K McIvor come in hard on Wright which resulted in both visiting the wall in an entertaining fashion on turns three and four. Stirling kept his cool and escaped the onslaught to take the win, Wright recovered for second with the long-time leader K McIvor third.

Victorious Fegan’s

The Fegan brothers Graham and Gavin commanded proceedings in the Brisca F2 Stock Cars, sharing the wins between themselves. Gavin was the star performer in heat one, storming through from the blue grade to take the honours ahead of Graham. James Crossett set the early benchmark in heat two however it wasn’t long until Craig McConnell was large in his mirror. Super Star McConnell edged ever closer to the race leader until disaster struck in the closing stages when his car ground to a halt with mechanical drama’s. This paved the way for Graham to chase down Crossett and take the win, Crossett was the runner up with Sam McKay third. Gavin was back on form in the meeting final where he cruised to victory again ahead of Graham, Sam McKay showed good pace to record another pleasing third place finish.

Lowry lands final win

The 1300 Stock Cars provided the contact element of Sunday’s billing. There was a top mix of close fast racing and contact action throughout the afternoon. Ballyclare’s Michael Logan was the first to score, with a well calculated win in heat one. Recent form man Robbie Wright was back to his winning ways in heat two taking the honours well clear of the opposition.  The action was hard and fast in the meeting final with plenty of sparks flying as the star graders traded places. Nicky Lowry comes out on top taking the win ahead of Adrian McKinstry and Jon McQuillan.

Support Formula

The Group two Lightning Rods were on hand to complete Saturday’s race card. David Nesbitt was the form man, bagging himself a heat and final double only to be denied the hat trick by Clive Wilson who glided to victory in heat two. Sunday’s support action was provided by the youngsters in the Junior Rods and Micro F2’s. Matthew Drysdale and Christopher Cardwell shared the Junior heat wins before Drysdale stormed to victory in the Gold Cup Final. Joining Drysdale on the podium was Ballymena’s Cole McFall and Declan Og McFerran. The Micro F2’s treated the onlookers to a fine display of thrills and spills. Joshua Murray was the victor in event one before Lexi Crooks to the honours in the second event.  Lexi was again leading the way in the final outing of the day, before her machinery bounced out of control resulting in a roll over. Thankfully Lexi escaped the incident unscathed; Ava McCreight took charge at the restart and went on to take glory.
