Drivers enjoy a “Splash-Fest” at the Raceway

The second half of the Raceway season commenced in style on Wednesday evening at Nutts Corner  Raceway. A pre meeting thunderstorm left the track very wet indeed, with several areas of standing water adding an extra challenge for the drivers.

The non-contact Group 2 Lighting Rods made a welcome return to contest their annual King of the Corner title. Two heat races which were won by Mark Goldie and David Nesbitt were used to form the grid in points order for the showdown. With all the heat points tallied Goldie emerged the pole sitter with Clive Wilson alongside while David Reynolds and Nesbitt occupied the second row.  At the green flag Wilson powered his rapid Vauxhall Astra from the outside line immediately into the lead with Goldie and Reynolds in tow. It soon become clear that nobody had the pace of Wilson as he continued to streak clear of his fellow competitors with each passing lap. While Wilson's dominance continued, the race for second and third was fierce between Goldie, Reynolds and Nesbitt. Wilson completed the distance to take the win ahead of Gerorge Esler who worked his way through the traffic in the closing laps. Reynold kept his cool to record a fine third place finish.

It was also championship time for the popular Brisca F2 Stock Cars as they took to the track for their Gold Cup title. In a similar format to the GP2's, two heat races would determine the title decider grid. Scott Finlay and Dean McCrory were the heat victors, while they managed to taste glory both the very wet heat events claimed many victims as the excessive water wreaked havoc with some of the machinery. 11 cars were in action for the closed grid final, Antrim ace Christopher Kincaid took up the early running with Finlay and D McCrory giving chase. While Kincaid continued to lead it become clear that Finlay was the faster of the duo as he closed the gap and was now hot on the tail of the race leader. This is how it would remain to the flag, while Finlay seemed to be slightly faster Kincaid used his wealth of experience to complete the race distance and indeed take the win ahead of Finlay, Bradley McKinstry completed the podium steps by taking a creditable third place finish.

The evening's support action was supplied by the Junior Rods, Stock Rods and Micro F2's. A healthy showing of 16 Stock Rods were in attendance, Ian Thompson Snr was the first to score when he took the flag in heat one, Niall McFerran was in fine form come heat two where he stormed to a somewhat convincing victory. Stephen McCready has been the toast of the Stock Rod scene this season and when it come to the trophy race he emerged on top once more. McCready breezed through the pack in the final to take the win ahead of Matthew McKinstry and Thompson.

The Junior Rods also showcased a healthy field of 15 cars. Anais McCreight who was giving her new car it's first shakedown stormed to victory in both the heat events. McCreight set the early pace again in the final before a caution period was required to deal with a pile up on the back straight. McCreight took up the running once again on the restart however it wasn't long until Joshua McKinstry was making progress through the field which eventually saw him take up the running at the front. McKinstry completed the remaining laps to take the flag ahead of McCreight and Matthew Milliken. This however wasn't to be the final result as McKinstry found himself docked 2 places for excessive contact, this promoted McCreight to the win with Milliken now second and McKinstry third.

The young stars in the Micro F2's braved the elements to complete another action packed three events. They all adapted well to the slippery track conditions which really highlights the talents of these young drivers, Jake Barrett was the pace setter all evening where he was first across the line in all three events.

The race action continues this Wednesday 2nd August at 7.30pm featuring the Brisca F2 Grand National Series Round 5, Junior Rod Gold Cup, Micro F2's & Stock Rods.
