Double helping of Stock Rod Championship action opens new Raceway Season in style.

The ORCi Stock Rod's contested their World Cup and Irish Open Championships over the course of Saturday and Sunday in what was the opening meetings of the new season at NuttsCorner Raceway.

Saturday's event seen the powerful front wheel drive machines battle it out for the prestigious World Cup title, two qualifying heats won by Ian Thompson Snr and Stephen McCready determined the grid positions for the World Cup showdown. McCready capitalised on his front row starting slot to open up an early gap in the feature race, leaving his fellow competitors in his dust. While Mc Cready continued to command proceedings out front all eyes were on the rapid Jack Kennedy who was on a charge through the field after scoring no points during the heat races. McCready completed the distance well clear of Kennedy, who had driven a blinder to pick up the runner up spot. Local man Raymond Harper made his presence felt also as he recorded a fine third place finish in what was his first meeting back in the formula after a lengthy break from Stock Rod racing.

The Irish Open Championship was Sunday's feature race, with a public draw format of determining the starting line up, all was to play for.  After the draw had taken place Stephen Doherty and Sam McKinstry emerged as the front row starters with the World Cup runner up Kennedy in slot number three on the grid. On the green flag the front two runners got away clean but it was clear they were under strong pressure from Kennedy, the previous evenings winner McCready received a black cross on lap 1 for a jump start which indicated he may be penalised at the conclusion of the race.  The race was still young when a caution period was required to clear up an incident on turn one, which resulted in Aaron Moody's retirement from the race with heavy damage. On the restart it become clear it was going to be a two horse race between McCready and Kennedy, with McCready now looking a way past the now race leader Kennedy. As the laps continued to pass Kennedy continued to hold on tight to the inside line while McCready persevered on the outside looking for a way into the top spot. McCready finally squeezed into the lead and went on to take the flag ahead of Kennedy, Scotland's Jim Pitcaithly and Thompson Snr. Unfortunately McCready found himself docked two places for the earlier jump start, promoting Kennedy to the victory with Pitcaithly the runner up. Two heats completed the Stock Rod activity for the weekend, with Graham Moore and Philip Wilson recording the victories.

Saturday's Support formula round up.

The BriSCA F2 Stock Car, Micro F2's and Junior Rod's were on hand to offer support to the Stock Rod formula on Saturday evening, with high car counts in each class, they produced some spectacular racing. The F2's featured more than 20 cars on track leading to some fast and furious race action. A different winner recorded victory in each of the three races which really highlight the competitiveness of this formula in Northern Ireland. Gary Blair and Gordy McKee shared the heat wins while Kilrea's Thomas Greer scooped the silverware in the meeting final. The Micro F2's got their season of to a flying start with a great showing of the scaled down F2 style machines on track. Tyler McClurkin and Rueben Kernohan were the heat winners before Randalstown's Rhianna Murray took the final honours ahead of the heat winners who completed the podium steps. Josh Gooch and Shea Duff enjoyed wins in the Junior Rod section which also featured a large car count.

Ballymena lad Cole McFall got the hammer well down in the meeting final where he claimed the win and indeed the silverware ahead of Jonathan Brown who put in a top performace to claim the runner up sport, Jamie Hunter rounded out the podium positions in third.

Saturday's Support formula round up.

Both the BriSCA and Micro F2's were again taking part in the second day of racing, they were joined with the heaving hitting 2L Saloons and 1300 Stock Cars. Rueben Kernohan recorded his second race wins in as many days when he took the flag in Micro F2 heat one, Rhianna Murray was another  who tasted success again when she romped to a fantastic victory during the second encounter. Scott Hosie kept his best to last, taking a somewhat convincing win in the meeting final ahead of Tyler McClurkin and Jack Morrow. Jack Boal was the toast of the F2 scene where he scored a heat and final double victory only to be denied the perfect hat trick by Gordy McKee who picked up the honours in heat two. The 2L Saloons were on track in force with an increased showing of cars in comparisons to 2016, Anthony McIvor and Daryl McCammon were the heat winners. A McIvor scored victory once again in the lively meeting final which featured a big roll-over on the back straight from Kieran McIvor who thankfully merged from his machinery unscathed. It was none less than the Adrian McKinstry show in the 1300 Stock Cars where he dominated proceedings taking wins in both the heats and the final. McKinstry was followed home in the final by William Stewart and Ivan Elliot.

The Race action continues at NuttsCorner on Wednesday 19 April at 7.30pm with the BriSCA F2 Grand National Series Round 1, Micro F2's, 2L Saloons & Junior Rods all on the race card. If that isn't enough to satisfy your cravings for short oval action there is a further instalment of racing on Sunday 23 April -at 2.00pm where a Caravan Destruction Derby will headline the meeting as well as racing from the Micro F2's, BriSCA F2's, Junior Rods & GP2 Lightning Rods.
