Conor scoops Gold Helmet

There was a bumper showing of the ever popular BriSCA F2's in attendance for their first domestic outing of 2016 in what is a mammoth season for the formula in the province with the British title being staged here in June.

Local ace Conor Hughes set out his intentions for the new season with a fantastic win in heat one, the 2014 Irish Champion Craig McConnell followed the rapid Hughes home in second position with  David Lilburn recording a fantastic third place finish highlighting the rookie as one to watch in the current campaign.  McConnell managed to go one better in the second heat taking the flag ahead of Sean McFerran himself a former Junior Rod Irish Champion, Hughes was on hand to pick up the last of the podium spots in third.  Points gained in the heat events determined the closed grid for the Gold Helmet championship with the heat winners placed on the front row for the feature race.

At the green the pole sitters challenged amongst each other for supremacy however it wasn’t long until Hughes showed the upper hand and begun to extend his advantage out front. Hughes took the win from McConnell with the current Irish Champion Chris Kincaid in third.

Silverware for Jamie

Jamie Hunter was quick to highlight his much improved pace in 2016 after a well calculated final win in the Junior Rod section.

The young guns were out in force with many new faces joining the ranks which compensates for the drivers that are lost at the end of each season due to the upper age limit.  In an afternoon of sunshine and blustery showers the track conditions were somewhat trying but it didn’t bother the stars of tomorrow as they royally entertained the onlookers. It was the young lady racers who dominated proceedings in heat one with Anais McCreight taking the flag however she was penalised for contact on Leah Hughes which handed the win to Antony Kincaid.  Kincaid continued his victorious  start to the season with another win in heat two followed home by Hughes and Shea Duff.

The final was arguably race of the day with conditions still below average the youngsters struggled for traction adding to the spectacle. Jamie Hunter kept his head down and recorded the win ahead of McCreight who had embarked on a mammoth outside line trek for glory in the closing laps gaining many places on her mini adventure. Leah Hughes picked up the final podium place making it an all round good day for the girls!

Double delight for Greer in the 1300's

Curtis Greer enjoyed a dream afternoon in what was the first outing for his brand new built Vauxhall Corsa C. The Ballymena ace romped to victory in both the second heat and the meeting final being denied the perfect hat trick of wins by Jon McQuillan who himself navigated his pristine new car to a convincing victory in heat one. Scottish visitor Jason Secker was another who had a good afternoon recording top three finishes in each of the races. The 1300 Stock Cars were in fine form all afternoon with no shortage bumper action, like the F2's they have a lot to look forward to this term with the National Championship being staged here in the Autumn.

Support action.

The 2L Saloons got their season of to a sluggish start with only four drivers in action, the McIvor brothers Anthony & Kieran stole the thunder between them by recording wins in both the races. It was Kieran who won the family battle by scooping the final silverware followed by Anthony and Robert Mawhinney.

The ORCi Stock Rods were also down on numbers but of those present Jack Kennedy stood out as the one to watch, the former Junior Rod star name romped to a spectacular hat trick of victories showing talent well beyond his years.

Completing the packed race programme was the Micro F2's for drivers aged from 7-11.  Jack Morrow was at the top of the class scooping wins in both the events followed home Tyler McClurkin.

With the first meeting of the season done and dusted we now turn our attentions to our next instalment of oval race action which takes place on Wednesday 6th April at 7.30 pm featuring F2's,2L Saloons, Stock Rods,1300 Stock Cars and Group 2 Lightning Rods.
