Super Star McConnell on red hot winning streak

Triple Irish champion Craig McConnell continued his sizzling form with yet another final win in the F2 Stock Cars.  Race fans were treated to a bumper instalment of open wheel action with 19 cars taking to the track for heat one, after several lively exchanges Ryan McCrory emerged the winner which was quite a turnaround of fortune for the young Antrim lad after a big crash at the previous meeting.  Irish Open champion Chris Kincaid enjoyed a fine win in heat two where he battled all the way from the back of the pack to take the honours.  The meeting final provided all the vital ingredients the onlookers have become accustomed to in recent weeks with a mix of fast racing and bruising encounters. Heat two winner Kincaid looked on course to record his second victory of the afternoon until mechanical gremlins sidelined the multiple champion soon after he took up the top spot, early race leader William Murray inherited the lead once again with Dean McCrory close behind, R McCrory’s luck was soon to end after a big coming together with Bradley McKinstry only five laps from home required a caution period. Murray was quick to get away at the green however McConnell was on a charge and closing ground rapidly, McConnell closed the gap and took up the running with three laps remaining and went on to take his third final win on the trot from Murray and D McCrory.

Doc grabs Helmet

The Group 2 Lighting Rods were a welcome addition to the race schedule as they made their 2015 season debut at the Raceway and to add extra significance they were treated to three closed grid races to contest the Golden Helmet championship.  Two reverse grid heats would determine a grid for the big show down with Kenny ‘KIT’ Carson and David Gillespie sharing the wins. Ballymena’s Carson looked as though he could well be the man to go all the way in the title decider after a rather dominating start, as the laps ticked away Carson appeared to lose pace and it was long before the others were large in his mirror. Nigel Doherty was the first to make a move on Carson, with many more in close contention Carson got stuck on the outside line and soon fell down the ranks, Doherty went on to take the win from Freddie Fleck and Stewart Nicholl.

Gold Cup for Kennedy

Jack Kennedy was the star pupil in the junior ranks where he claimed a convincing double victory. Like the Group Two’s the juniors contested two reverse grid heats Anthony Kincaid the first to taste success with an excellent win in heat one which unfortunately was declared with two laps remaining after a nasty roll over for Jack Kearney.  Kennedy begun his winning streak when he collected the flag in heat two, this coupled with a runner up finish in the first encounter secured the local pole position for the Gold Cup Final which he went on to win in fine style, Kincaid rounded out a solid afternoon’s performance with a runner up finish ahead of Shea Duff in third.

Support Action

The 1300 Stock Cars and Euro Stocks provided the support element of the programme. The 1300’s were a little down in numbers from previous meetings owing to a clash of fixtures with a mainland venue where a few of the locals were in action however the 8 cars in attendance put on a great display with plenty of bumper work, the heat wins were shared between Ben Armstrong and former junior star Robert Mawhinney before Chris Hamill stamped his authority to collect the final silverware. The Euro Stocks were another class making their track debut for the season with a decent showing of around ten competitors. Stephen Doherty cruised to a comfortable victory in heat one with Liam Irwin the victor in both heat two and the final.
