Final honour for Conor

Slightly down on numbers from recent meetings, ten F2’s took to the track for heat 1. The race was still young when the yellow flags were called to retrieve the stricken machines of Ronald Scott and Mark Rainey after they had a coming together on the exit of turn four. The suspension resulted in the cars all being bunched up in single file order for the restart, with star grader Christopher Kincaid taking full advantage by taking up the lead very quickly. Kincaid powered well clear to record an easy win from Ryan McCrory and Craig McConnell. Rain started to fall just as the F2’s were taking to the grid for heat 2 leaving the track rather slippery. Conor Hughes enjoyed a free run from his new blue grade starting position to take the win from McConnell and Kincaid. It was a much drier picture in the final allowing the powerful 2 litre machines to get up to full speed. Again it was Hughes who set the pace with a train of star graders in hot pursuit. As the lap boards appeared McCrory and Kincaid had closed in on the rapid Hughes but it wasn’t enough, Hughes took the win with McCrory a gallant runner up and Kincaid completing the podium positions.

Final delight for flyin’ Ryan

Week after week things are picking up for the 1300 stock car class and with numbers well into the teens. In heat 1 we were treated to some top class contact action. Ex production car man Colin Blake took up the early led but it wasn’t long before Conor Smith took over out front. The bumpers were flying in hard as the star graders all battled hard to make up places; Smith kept his cool and took the win from Dan Feeney and Michael Logan. As with the F2 heat two the track was damp for the 1300’s second encounter of the night adding to the spectacle as the small front wheel drive machines battled for traction. Blake set the early running again but stock rod star Raymond Harper swiftly made his move on Blake to take up the lead, Harper went all the way to take the win from Ryan Stewart and Logan. The final was brought to a very early halt when a marker tyre was pushed onto the racing line. Blake took up at the front on the resumption before colliding hard with the wall on the exit of turn two bringing out the yellow flags. The late suspension played into the hands of Ryan Stewart allowing him to slice his way to the front and consequently take the win from Harper and Logan.

Bradderz Double

Fourteen young chargers took to the raceway for Junior Rod heat 1 with young Anthony Kincaid finding himself starting from the red grade for the first time in his career. Dean McCrory powered through from the back of the grid like a knife through butter to take an excellent win from Bradley McKinstry and Niall McFerran. McFerran occupied the top spot briefly in heat 2 before McKinstry moved through to the head of proceedings. The yellow flags were brought out to clear Aaron Moody off the raceway after he crashed out on the river bend, things then got a little messy on the resumption with another 3 suspension periods being called, due to cars spinning and crashing everywhere, McKinstry eventually emerged the winner from McCrory. young Bradley McKinstry intentions were clear in the final with the local lad building up a healthy advantage out front very early on. McCrory give a great chase but just couldn’t catch the flying 74 machine of McKinstry, McKinstry took the win from McCrory in second and with McFerran in third, which concluded a fine evening of point scoring for the Kilrea teenager.

The McKee three

Half a dozen ORC Lightning Rods were in action for their first heat including Richard Stewart who was making his return after serving a ban for several months. Gordy McKee completed the distance to claim a very commanding win from his brother Ben in second. It was the turn of Ben McKee to shine in heat two with the local charger recording a fine win with Stewart the runner up this time. Ben McKee turned the heat up in the final setting a blistering pace out front in the opening laps with Stewart also pushing hard in second. Stewart tried all he knew but it wasn’t enough and the new Golden Helmet champion McKee went on to add another piece of silverware to his ever growing collection, Stewart came home in second with Wayne Hewitt in third.

Speedy’s back!!

Stock Rod heat one saw nine cars take to the track including 2013 track debuts for veteran of the class Victor McAfee and white roof Graham Young. Young set the early pace but a recent graduate from the junior ranks Marc Morrell soon relieved Young of the top spot. Morrell held the lead for several laps before Antrim man Stephen McCready made his move for the win, McCready took the victory in fine style with Morrell the runner up and Derek McMillan finishing in third. Young again held the lead in heat to but this was short lived with Crumlin’s Johnny Cardwell soon taking over at the front and going all the way to take the win from Steven McKane. McCready got the foot down to stretch into a dominating lead in the early stages of the final, Irish Champion Stevie McNeice was a man on a mission pushing his rapid Vauxhall Corsa to its limits to close the gap to McCready. McNeice was soon along side the leader looking for the pass but this was no easy task. As the duo battled hard, the pack gradually closed onto their tails and in the midst of the scrap for glory McNeice stepped out a fraction sideways and this resulted in him being spun out of the race. This gave McCready a bit of breathing space, allowing him to complete the distance and take the win from Carl Sloan and Derek McMillan.

Cara demonstrates Girl Power!!!!

Seven brave ladies took to the track for the inaugural running of a 1300 stock car Ladies Race at Nutts Corner Raceway. As they took the green flag it soon become apparent that cars 143 and 70 had very talented pilots behind their steering wheels as the duo powered well clear of the rest of the pack. It was junior rod Star Cara Wightman who stunned the spectators by racing the rapid 1300 Vauxhall Corsa around the track at a pace that would challenge many of the male racers who race these cars weekly! Cara may well be one to watch in the future should she decide to continue her stock car career after she reaches the upper age limit in the junior formula. Wightman completed the distance to take a fantastic win from Hayley Bevan in the 70 car; Hayley also provided a flawless performance demonstrating her on track knowledge gained from her previous racing experience in the Juniors here at the corner.
