Boxing Day 2013

Nutts Corner Raceway Remembers ‘Big D’.

A massive crowd were in attendance at the annual Boxing Day meeting at Nutts Corner Raceway, the meeting carried extra significance this year as it was dedicated to the memory of the late Derek ‘Big D’ Mason who was the resident commentator at the County Antrim venue before his sad passing while commentating at this meeting in 2012.

The Race fans were treated to a full afternoon’s programme of top stock car action complimented by glorious winter sunshine, while the drivers were greeted by slippery and greasy track conditions caused by the overnight rain and frost which set the scene perfectly for some terrific racing.

Proceedings began with all the drivers, cars and staff assembling on the track to observe a minutes silence for ‘Big D’ before the juniors took to the track for race one of the thirteen race programme. Each of the classes contested two heats before their respective Derek Mason Memorial King of Nutts Corner Finals.

It was young Niall Fegan who was the first to be crowned the king as he cruised to a great victory in the Junior Rod title race. The youngsters were in out in force with more than fifteen of the rapid front wheel drive machines battling hard for supremacy. The heat wins were shared by David McKinnon and Anthony Kincaid but when it comes trophy time it was Fegan who reigned supreme with Liam Wilson the runner up and Niall McFerran third.  The future looks very promising for the Junior Rods and going on boxing days performance Fegan will be one to watch in 2014.

Antrim man Christopher Kincaid continued his winning streak in the BriSCA F2 Stock Cars as he added a fine heat and final double to his tally. The F2’s provided bumper action aplenty throughout the afternoon as the star graders all battled hard for the top spot. Former Irish Champion Craig McConnell debuted his RCE chassis on home soil and cruised to a fine victory in heat one, before  Kincaid took over at the top winning heat two and the feature race. McConnell tried all he knew to unsettle Kincaid who is the current Irish Champion but it wasn’t enough leaving Kincaid to take the flag, McConnell was the gallant runner up with recent returnee Graham Moore finishing in third rounding out  a top afternoon of action for the Bangor man.

The 1300 Stock Cars put on a fine show also with the former Stock Rod British Champion Raymond Harper coming out on top in what was one of his rare outing in the contact formula.  Harper also enjoyed a win in heat one with star man Ryan Stewart the victor in heat two. Harper got his foot down early in the title decider cruising all the way to the finish and easily capturing his second victory of the day crowning himself the Derek Mason Memorial King of Nutts Corner. Raymond was delighted with his win as he was a close friend of the late ‘Big D’. Thomas McGarry was next across the finish line with Mark Rainey a fine third place.

Warringstown’s Ross Houston pulled of a show stopping performance to crown himself King in the 2L Saloon Stock Cars.  Houston kept his best to last as he hunted down the double heat winner Thomas McCrory jnr in the closing laps of the final. Houston hauled closed the gap on the yellow grader until on the lap boards he was within striking distance of the leader with Irish Champion Ryan Wright a few car lengths behind, Houston kept his cool and on the last lap he launched a heavy assault on the airport bend partially spinning McCrory eventually grinding to a halt blocking the exit of the corner, by this stage Wright has issued the bumper hard on the stranded Houston eventually pushing him through the blockage. The duo frantically made a dash for the last corner almost bumper to bumper but it was Houston who comes out on top providing a grand stand finish for the many spectators. Wright was the gallant runner up with Kieran McIvor third.

A Caravan Demolition Derby concluded the festive blockbuster which was won by Billy Finnegan jnr. A number of presentations were made during the afternoon including trophies for the Irish Points Champions. The points champions are of course those who accumulate the most points throughout the course of the season in their respective classes, this achievement requires a high level of consistency and dedications from the winners.  The Irish Points Champions are Dean McCrory (Junior Rods, Christopher Kincaid ( BriSCA F2 Stock Cars), Ryan Wright (2L Saloon Stock Cars) and Ryan Stewart ( 1300 Stock Cars).  Another special presentation was made by the race promoter Ian Thompson to Ian and Helen Kirkpatrick marking twenty four years of loyal service to Nutts Corner Raceway.
