2018 Saloon Stock Car Championship Weekend

The Saloon Stock Cars take centre stage at Nutts Corner Raceway this weekend with a full programme of championship events for the heavy metal brigade of the ovals. The Moira Road circuit hosts the Irish Open Championship on Saturday evening before the destiny of the Irish Masters is decided on Sunday afternoon, and race fans can look forward to the biggest grid of Saloons seen in the province for many years, with a terrific entry of 37 cars booked in!

European Champion Deane Mayes tops the entry list and theNorfolkbased star will start as one of the hot favourites for honours. Bedfordshire’s Adam O’Dell is another expected frontrunner having previously tasted success at The Corner in his 1300 Stock Car, along with 2013 Irish Open Champion George Boult. Star grade racer Kieran Bradford travels all the way from Newton Abbott inDevonto compete and the sparks are sure to fly when former British Champion Lee Sampson from Kings Lynn takes to track. Jack Thompson, Jacob Roff, Ben King, Ian Elms, Cole Atkins and Scott Greenslande complete the healthy representation fromEnglandfor the event.

The Scottish challenge is as strong as ever too, headed by the current Scottish Champion Kyle Irvine from Glenrothes. Former British Champion Luke Grief is always a top contender for honours, along with Barry Russell and Ian McLaughlin. Jason Secker from Denny has made the switch from the 1300 class this year and looks right on the pace, while the hard charging Ross Watters from Leven in Fife and Dundee based Barry Glen are sure to be in the mix, along with Aaryn Triggs from South Lanarkshire and Motherwell’s Graeme Shevill.

The local entry is the strongest it has been for many years as the class enjoys somewhat of a revival in the province this year. The Coleraine based McIvor boys, Irish Champion Anthony and his brother Kieran, will relish the prospect of a big grid of cars this weekend and the chance to mix it with the UK mainland stars. Former Irish Champion Ryan Wright has made a return to the ovals this year and the Cullybackey Charger will be looking to get in amongst the action along with another returnee, Matt Stirling from Ballymoney. Newcomer Peter Greer took the honours last time out at Nutts Corner Raceway and other local hopes rest with Geoff Anderson, Girvin Houston, William Ogilby, Geoff Martin, Ryan Patton, Davy Patton and Scott Rainey.

There’s a full programme of support races over the two days, with the ever popular F2 Stock Cars, Stock Rods, 1300 Stock Cars, Group Twos and Junior Rods all on display. Saturday’s meeting, which is promoted by Ballymena Raceway, features the Stock Rods, racing for the McGill Motorsport Trophy, plus Group Two Lightning Rods and Junior Rods, while Sunday’s support racing includes the F2 Stock Cars, 1300 Stock Cars, Micro F2s and Elite Hot Rods.

The action at Nutts Corner Raceway, which is situated opposite the Sunday Market, gets underway at 6:30pm on Saturday evening and 1:30pm on Sunday afternoon. It will be the biggest weekend of Saloon Stock Car racing in the province this year, so don’t miss it!
